gamezone space invaders

Designing a special schoolyard, commisioned by Magazine stedelijk interieur.

A schoolyard has to be child-friendly and inviting to play. The square offers plenty of play possibilities like a trampoline field in the shape of a moon-landscape, a slide in a slope, eight swings in a row, balance beams, a sandbox and sports-grounds for the soccer-play ‘panna knock-out’.
Central in the design are Space Invaders, a classical computer-game with aliens from 1978. The image of these aliens is used to design play devices, while sandbox and colored tiles in the square are shaped like space invaders. The schoolyard itself is one big computer-game with battle-possibilities. It links children who grow up with computer-games and makes them acquaintance with computer history. And they can play outside the old fashioned way!
